KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Horizon Credit Union CEO Beverly Boling announced today the Sullivan County Clerk’s Office will purchase the downtown location of Horizon Credit Union. Located at 408 Clay Street. The County will take possession of the building in the Spring of 2020.
“When we opened our new headquarters located at 1201 N Eastman Rd, in Kingsport in 2016, we knew we had two locations minutes apart and that at some point we would need to merge the Clay St. branch into the Eastman Rd. branch. Not long ago, Sullivan County approached us with interest in purchasing the building, and it fits perfectly with our vision for our Members” said Boling.
Established in 1932 as the Municipal Employees Credit Union, in 1999 the local credit union merged in the Kingsport Postal and Federal Employees Credit Union and changed their name to First Kingsport Credit Union. A merger with AGC Credit Union in 2014, resulted in another name change and two additional branches in 2016. Horizon Credit Union now serves over 6,000 Members.
“The Board of Directors decided the sale of this building will help enable our vision for Horizon Credit Union to expand. This opportunity will allow us to better serve our Members as we consider new locations in underserved areas of the community,” said Horizon Credit Union Board Chairperson, Cindy Humphrey.
Teresa Jacobs, Sullivan County Clerk said, “I am thrilled about the opportunity to purchase the Clay Street property from Horizon Credit Union. This has been a long time dream of many for the Kingsport office. It’s going to be much more accessible for our elderly and persons with disabilities and the drive through window is a convenience that our Kingsport office has never had. I am very excited to be able to provide the citizens of Sullivan County with this opportunity.”
The closure date for the Clay Street branch of Horizon Credit Union will be March 13th, 2020 and all Credit Union employees will transfer to other HCU locations.
